Thermometer
A district nurse carried a bag with items she needed every day. Important, of course, was the thermometer to take her temperature. Nowadays, of course, these are digital. Also in the bag: an hourglass to calculate the heart rate, scissors with bandages, a pencil to update the status and - importantly - a handkerchief to wipe away tears (or snot). Every woman used to carry a handkerchief, by the way.
