Theriaca

Many medicines from the old pharmacy cupboard are no longer common. The most expensive medicine was 'theriaca'. It consisted of a hundred ingredients, including viper meat. So much viper meat was needed that special viper gardens were required. A very curious ingredient was ground cat mummy. Tens of thousands of cat mummies disappeared from Egypt at the behest of European apothecaries.
