The country doctor was often also a pharmacist. Powders were divided into portions on a planer and then turned into pills on a turntable. During holidays, the doctor's children, along with their mothers, helped make pills. After turning, a pill shaker was often used to apply a thin layer of gold leaf. This masked the bitter taste.
