Pelvic compass
Museum de Dorpsdokter holds a journal of a Brabant midwife. Piet de Lang recorded a total of 1094 deliveries he attended in Hilvarenbeek between 1858-1871. He carried his instruments in a cassette to keep things in place. The instruments included a stethoscope, a thermometer and a pelvic compass, which he used to measure the measurements of the pelvis externally, so that he knew whether the child could be born easily by the normal route.
