District nurse

The district nurses did important work. Every village and district relied on them day and night. Among their main heroic deeds was the struggle to improve hygiene in all households. The cross associations depended entirely on donations: the nurse was the brunt of this with her low salary, with no pension provision. Even in-service training she received only at her own expense. The Netherlands treated its heroes sparingly.
