A poop box

A poop box in a museum? Yes indeed. Even into the twentieth century, hygiene was in a poor state. Sometimes twenty families had to make do with just one poop box. No wonder infectious diseases like cholera claimed so many victims.

So how does that work?

Museum De Dorpsdokter has two nineteenth-century poop boxes in its possession. In the video, Marie Blommaart - aged 102 in 2023 - tells how the periodic cleaning of the poop box was done at her home.
