The forceps consist of a 'male' and a 'female' spoon. They are placed around the child's head, after which the doctor gently pulls the forceps without squeezing. Peter Chamberlen was the inventor in 1670, but he kept his invention a secret. Even the woman giving birth was not allowed to see it. With this secrecy, Chamberlen unnecessarily delayed the development of medical science. It was not until 1723 that Jan Palfijn of Ghent showed his forceps to the whole world.
