Heat
Around 1900, this device caused quite a stir. It could produce medicinal heat throughout the body. Called diathermy, it was expected to cure rheumatism and even cancer. However, diathermy had at most a symptomatic effect. In today's language, diathermy was little more than a hoax. A doctor who practised it as late as the 1960s ended up on a list of notorious quacks.
