Ether
Anaesthetising in surgery is a relatively young discovery. In 1846, John Collins Warren operated on a patient after dentist William Morton put a cap on his mouth and nose and sprinkled it with ether. After the successful operation, the doctor called out to those present: 'Gentlemen, this is no humbug '. Anaesthesia quickly became popular. A Scottish doctor, delighted that pain during surgery was a thing of the past, named his daughter Anasthesia.
