Our fine apothecary's cabinet was built in 1786 and stood in the town of Heusden. It is an exuberantly decorated wall cabinet in Empire style with turned wood, lots of gold leaf, with no fewer than 92 drawers on which the contents are described in Latin inscriptions, with shields with medicinal plants on them. Between the pillars you can see angels and lions. All visitors say the same thing: a showpiece!
A procession of pharmacists have stood behind the counter of the Heusden pharmacy since 1786. When the last of them quit in 1961, the precious apothecary's cabinet moved to a pharmacy in Ridderkerk to stay there until the 1980s. The municipality of Heusden eventually bought back the cabinet and stored it for the time being.
Finally, in 2015, the apothecary cupboard was moved from Heusden to Hilvarenbeek, where it was given a place of honour in our museum. By the way, the double hose above the counter never hung in Heusden, but was later purchased elsewhere.
